Process
Vacuum Forming
The design process began with molding the foundational form of the shoe. A vacuum formed plastic shell was created directly over the last to establish the base silhouette.
Shape Refinement
Using a Dremel tool, precise cuts were made into the vacuum formed shell to sculpt the style lines and features. These cuts were guided by the Tacoma’s bold edges and utilitarian curves.
Sole Construction
The sole was handcrafted from foam, shaped and refined with sandpaper for a perfect fit with the upper structure. This added volume and support while allowing for ergonomic shaping. The style under the sole was designed in illustrator, laser cut on clear plastic, then used bondo to shape the exact form.
Material Selection & Color Blocking
A mix of textiles and fabrics were carefully chosen to wrap the upper, selected to resemble the Tacoma’s branding, with a color palette inspired by Toyota's off-road racing team, interior seat fabrics and the durable bed liner.
Automotive Influence
Elements such as the side panel graphics, lower sole stitching patterns, and outsole silhouette subtly mimic Tacoma details like fender flares, lighting elements, and trim geometry.
Outcome
The final result is a one-of-a-kind shoe that captures the essence of a Toyota Tacoma in both visual identity and construction technique. Through a mix of manual and digital processes, this design demonstrates how transportation design cues can be translated into wearable products with personality, performance, and storytelling.
